How Christians Honor The Bodily Resurrection Of Jesus Christ Biblically

Ask a Christian why they worship on Sunday and you will receive many answers.

One such answer is found in the clear fact that the resurrection of Jesus Christ took place on Sunday.

Luke 24:1
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.

It is correct that Jesus rose on Sunday. However, where does scripture teach that Christians honor this day by attending services on Sunday instead of Saturday? Simply put, God's Word does not indicate anywhere that we are to do this.

God's Word does however say things like...

Exodus 20:8 (The fourth of the ten commandments.)
Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

Deuteronomy 5:10
But showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Matthew 5:17-18 (Jesus own words.)
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Developing the support for Sabbath keeping is indeed quite easy while by no means being isolated to only the above three verses. However, a defense against Sabbath keeping is not the point of this article. Our goal instead is an understanding of what institution has been put in place, by God Himself, as a reflection upon the resurrection of our Savior and Lord.

Romans 6:3-5
Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.

You see, Scripture quite clearly teaches that we remember the resurrection of Jesus Christ by baptism not Sunday worship. Trust me, if it has said Sunday worship I'd be the first one to support that position of the church.

It does not.

I do not.

Therefore when Christians honor the resurrection by going to church on Sunday they are doing so at their own whims instead of by obediently following Jesus Christ the risen Lord. The Bible is not silent here either...

Mark 7:8
You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men.

Mark 9:42
And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck.

Revelation 22:18-19
I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.
